I read a story about a mother who's suing a New York City preschool for$19,000, the amount she paid for 1 years tuition. The reason for the suit is because the school jeopardized her 4-year-old daughter Lucia's chances of getting into an elite private school (by not preparing her for the admissions exam you have to take to get into top notch/top dollar elementary schools in the city) and, therefore – wait for it, wait for it – ruined her chances of being a future Ivy Leaguer. The kicker...the child attended the school for only 3 weeks!
The lawsuit claims that the school put Imprescia's "very smart" 4-year-old in a class with kids half her age – a class where the focus was on shapes and colors. "The school proved not to be a school at all, but just one big playroom," the lawsuit says. AGAIN was this 3 year old not in preschool? I used to be a preschool teacher and in my day (10 years ago) we'd get excited if they knew shapes and colors by 3. We were considered an "advanced" classroom for teaching our children to count to 5 in Spanish as well as saying "hello" and "goodbye" yet this mothers upset her child was not taught to read, wasn't show famous paintings and reciting who it was painted by and Im sure somewhere in the suit is a claim the school didn't teach her daughter to read the works of Dickens or Twain. Come on people! These are 3 year olds. They should be using their imagination; painting, coloring, building castles out of card board boxes, and making mud pies. What I think this mothers not seeing is schools like Yale, Harvard and Princeton are not only looking for educated individuals but they also want students who are imaginative and creative. How do you think things this day and age are accomplished. Do you think Facebook became famous because Mark Zuckersburgs parents paid $20k for preschool? No its because he was socially awkward yet inventive. Google was created by 16 year old boys sitting in a bedroom probably in between games of Zelda and drinking their Hawaiian Punch. This woman is clearly not playing with a full deck. When did we decide kids just couldn't be kids. When did we come up with this notion they needed to start being college prepped at birth. Look at products we sell these days "Reading for Babies" REALLY? Why again would you want your baby to read? If you ask me that's pretty freaky. As an adult we are jaded. We have been hurt and lied to by people who claimed to love us. You only have your innocence once and as you grow up you lose that. I think we need to let kids have those moments as long as they can. Its a cruel world at times so why would we want to push them into that before they are ready? This moms getting a giant FAIL in my book.
